Agent Editor Day in Southern New England

Date(s) - Saturday, March 21, 2020
8:45 am - 3:30 pm

First Annual Southern New England SCBWI Agent/Editor Day

Saturday, March 21, 2020 8:45 a.m.—3:30 p.m.

Due to concerns about the coronavirus, and the State of Emergency called in Connecticut and Massachusetts, we have decided to move this event from Fairfield University to an online platform. We will be sending information to participants in the coming days to explain how this will work. We do not have opens to this online event at this time and still have a long waitlist. If we do start getting cancellations due to switching to an online platform, we will let you know.

Is there a waitlist? At this point the waitlist is full.

What if I am on the waitlist? If a spot becomes available, someone will contact you up to the morning of the event.

I came to the website the day registration opened and it was already full. Why do events fill so fast? New England is a large region full of active members. We added this event because our Agent/Editor Day in MA has sold out each year. We had 126 spots available. In order to give New England members the best chance at getting those spots, we only advertised the event in New England and were only open to SCBWI members. The picture book and graphic novel spots sold out in 5 minutes. The novel spots sold out in 8 minutes. Portfolio spots sold out within two hours.

Why not make more spots available? We are limited by room size and agent/editor availability. We were able to add two additional critiquers, but the room cannot hold more.

If you know so many people are interested, why not run more of these events? We would love to, but our bandwidth as volunteers is only so wide. Running an event like this is incredibly time consuming and required the availability of the space, the agents and editors, and the volunteers. But we use what we learn to help make each year better. We used to have one event, now we have two. Next year we are going to try to add a second day. Keep in mind we have many other programs that are free for members and do not require registration. Visit to see a list of all of our events.

Do I need to submit something now? No. You will bring your manuscript, dummy, or portfolio to the event.

Will I request specific editors/art directors/agents now? No. Participants will have the opportunity to request specific editors and agents before the event, sometime in February. Choices will be determined by whether the participant registers for picture book manuscript, picture book dummy, graphic novel, portfolio, or novel (chapter book, MG, YA). We will try to honor all requests, but requests cannot be guaranteed. Refunds will be available only if we are able to fill the spot from our wait list. Pal Pal Fees will be deducted.

Keep in mind, the purpose of the day is to get feedback. Even if you do not get to meet with the editor/agent of your choice, you can still submit to them later after using feedback from other agents or editors to revise your work. All faculty have agreed to accept queries from all participants for two months following the workshop. Specific guidelines will be provided after the event.

I’m worried about the coronavirus. Are refunds available? Yes. At this point, we have no plans to cancel this event. As of tonight there are no cases of coronavirus in Connecticut and we have no one flying in from other countries. We will be carefully monitoring the situation over the next three weeks and will inform you immediately of any changes. If we do have to cancel, we will look into online options as well as rescheduling. With that said, we want you to feel comfortable and to take care of yourself so we, along with all of SCBWI, are changing our cancellation policy. During this period of public health concerns, SCBWI has modified its cancellation/refund policy as follows:  If you are sick and cannot attend an event, you will be able to receive a full tuition refund up until the day of the event so that you can stay home, take care of yourself, and prevent the spread of illness. This policy is in effect until September 1, 2020. Be well.
